NPA-NXX Carrier Map Report

When trouble-shooting call routing for toll-free numbers that use NPA-NXX routing, it can be difficult to determine the carrier to which a call routes. This is partially because of the number of NPA-NXXs specified on branches in a CPR and partially because it is difficult to know what an OTHER branch might expand to.

The NPA-NXX Carrier Map Report function provides the ability to select a toll-free number, 8MS Routing Set or SMS Template and generate a report of NPA-NXXs and the carriers to which they route, based upon the CPR associated with the specified toll-free number, 8MS Routing Set or SMS Template.

In the menu frame, select the NPA-NXX Carrier Map link located in the System Activity section of the menu. The following will appear in the workspace frame:

Report Generation

To generate a report, select one of SMS Template, 8MS Routing Set or Toll Free Number. If you selected an SMS Template or a Toll Free Number the Date/Time field will populate with all records associated with the selected item. By default, the Active record will be selected and the Complex Record associated with this record will also be selected.

It is possible to select any available Date/Time record. However, since this report is intended to aid in trouble-shooting a production problem, it is unlikely that generating a report for any record other than the Active record will be of value.

In the same way, it is possible to select any Complex Record but selecting any other than the Active one (the record whose name is the date/time of the Date/Time selected) is unlikely to be of value.

Once you have selected the desired record, select the Generate button. This will start the report request and the following message will be shown.

Generation of an NPA-NXX Carrier Map report may take a few minutes, depending on the complexity of the Complex Record (CPR) being processed.

Report Format

The name of the file will contain the date and time the report was generated. The top of the file will contain a header of information about this report. The first line will be the report name followed by the date/time the report was generated. The next few lines following the title line will be information about the SMS Template, 8MS Routing Set or toll-free number, record date/time and CPR chosen. Below is an example of a report header generated for a toll-free number.

NPANXX Carrier Map Report - 06/07/16 08:26A
SMS Template:
8MS Routing Set:
Toll Free Number: 844-568-0170
Date/Time: 03/07/16 11:00A Active
Complex Record: 03/07/16-11:00A

Following the header of the file will be one or more lines of data. Each line contains a single path terminating at a Telephone or Announcement node. The data portion of the file will contain all NPA-NXX/Carrier combinations, expanding OTHER as appropriate based on the non-OTHER branches, plus all NPA-NXX/Announcement pairs. The format of the report is a comma-separated values (CSV) file; each line will contain either two or three columns.

In the event of an error, processing stops and a brief explanation of the error is written to the report. No routing data is generated in the report. Errors occur for node types that make it difficult or impossible to determine the exact carrer to which a call terminates.

The follow nodes will cause report generation to fail: Allocator, Date, Day, Ten Digit and Time.
Viewing a Report

To view the report, go to the Activity Log screen. View your recent activity and you will see something like the following.

To identify the activity entry containing the report, look for a Type of Report and an Abstract of NPANXX Carrier Map Report Completed. Select this item and the detail will appear in the bottom frame. You will see something like the following.

At the bottom of this detail you will see the Count of lines in the file, the File Size and a button labeled Download. Clicking on this button will cause the browser to open the report. As stated above, the generated report is in CSV format, allowing the report to be uploaded to any spreadsheet application, or any other application that supports CSV files. How the report is opened is dependent on how your browser is configured. In most cases the browser will offer to open the report in a spreadsheet application.

The number of lines in the file is based on the number of NPA-NXX combinations currently available. This will be in the range of 180,000 lines. The application you use to view this file must be capable of supporting files of at least this size.

The report will be available from the Activity Log for a few days and will then be removed. If you think you will need this report for future reference, it is suggested that you save the file locally.

This report is based upon the current set of valid NPA-NXXs available in the telephony network. In the event that an NPA Overlay/Split occurs, this report should be considered out-of-date and should be generated again from this screen.
